Clare McCarroll: Volunteering Makes Me Extraordinary

Clare McCarroll CASA volunteer

CASA of Atlantic & Cape May Counties Inc, NJ

My name is Clare McCarroll. I am a housewife from New Jersey.

I am married with two kids and a dog. I live in a two-story home and work part-time at Macy's. I am of average intelligence and definitely fall into the middle-class bracket in our society. The one thing that sets me apart from the rest of average Americans is that I am a volunteer.

Four years ago I decided to explore various groups that were in need of volunteers. CASA appealed to me because they represent our society's most vulnerable group—our children. Every day thousands of children in our country face abuse, neglect, mistreatment, and for the most part they are unable to speak for themselves. That is where CASA steps in. A CASA volunteer stands up for these children. It could be advocating for better education. It could be arranging for a child to receive much-needed services or it could be something simple like getting a child's treasured possessions from their last placement.

Being a CASA volunteer is a way we can come to the aid of those who cannot speak for themselves. If everyone stepped up and offered a helping hand to those in need, our community, our society and ultimately our world would be a much better place. You don't have to be extremely intelligent or extremely wealthy. You can simply be an average person who wants to make a difference. Take that small step and transform yourself from being an ordinary person to becoming someone who is extraordinary.
