Using Online Video Applications

All use of Skype, FaceTime or other online video chat applications for CASA/GAL business may only be used for general check-in conversations. No confidential information that would disclose specifics about a child’s identity or the case should be discussed. Although Skype is encrypted, the Microsoft servers that all Skype calls run through are not secure so confidentiality cannot be guaranteed.

National CASA Standards for Local CASA/GAL Programs, Standards 1.A.4. and 7.E.5.f., require regular and sufficient in-person contact with the child at least once every 30 days. Use of online video chat technology between a volunteer and a child is not prohibited, however, it is not a substitute for the regular and sufficient in-person contact requirement. If the volunteer is not able to meet that requirement staff should explore an exception as noted in Standard 7.E.5.f.

National CASAStandards for Local CASA/GAL Programs,Standard 7.D.2., requires that CASA/GAL supervisors are easily accessible and provide timely and thorough guidance to CASA volunteers through personal contact at least once per month. That personal contact can be by telephone, email or in-person. Use of online video chat technology is also acceptable as a form of personal contact between a volunteer and their supervisor.

  • If online video chat applications are utilized, these additional parameters should be followed:
  • Ensure you are in a private location with no other people around.
  • No recording may take place (audio or visual) by either party on the call.
  • Online video chats should not be conducted with children under the age of 13.
  • All calls should be prefaced with a verbal disclosure agreement to verify the above parameters are met and agreed upon at the beginning of each call.
