Family Preservation

Prevention of removal and family reunification are legal priorities when a child initially becomes involved in the child welfare system. These priorities are rooted in the 1980 Adoption Assistance and Child Welfare Act and the 1997 Adoption and Safe Families Act. The two laws require that “reasonable efforts” be made to ensure that no child is placed in foster care who can be protected in his or her own home, and that when removal is necessary, reunification always be attempted.

National CASA offers the following resources to help child welfare advocates understand family reunification.
